Intervention statement by the Kingdom of the Netherlands - Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

43rd Human Rights Council – Palais des Nations Geneva

Madam President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands wishes to thank Ms. Yanghee Lee for her report. We express our deepest appreciation for her work these past years.

Her report has again confronted us with a sobering reality and we call on the international community to support accountability efforts, including the International Criminal Court investigation, the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar and International Court of Justice’s preliminary ruling on provisional measures.

We further strongly encourage Myanmar to implement fully and promptly the recommendations of its own Independent Commission of Enquiry as well as the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State in support of the transition into a well-functioning democracy based on the rule of law. The Netherlands stands ready to respond to positive developments. It is in the hands of Myanmar to demonstrate sincere willingness to address the underlying causes of the situation in Rakhine State, which will ultimately bring stability and peace to all in Myanmar.

Lastly, the Netherlands emphasizes the importance of freedom of expression and press freedom and supports the calls for immediate release made by the Special Rapporteur.

Madam Special Rapporteur,

As the Human Rights Council seeks to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur, what would be your most pressing advice to your successor when it comes to engaging with the Myanmar civil government?
