Joint Statement of Belgium and the Netherlands at the Opening of the UNFPA Executive Board
Joint Statement of Belgium and the Netherlands at the Opening of the UNFPA Executive Board.
Mr. Executive Director,
Thank you for your very important and positive opening statement. I would like to make this statement on behalf of Belgium and my own country, the Netherlands to say a few words about the new Global Fundraising Initiative “SHE DECIDES” of the Netherlands Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen. The aim of the initiative is to join forces in support of the right of women and girls to decide, freely and for themselves, whether, when and how many children they have. Alexander De Croo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation of Belgium joined this initiative immediately after it was launched.
Governments, foundations and companies are also invited to joint this Global initiative. The response from all over the world has been overwhelmingly positive and many countries, organisations but also individuals have already announced that they are joining this initiative. “She Decides” is not a new institutional mechanism but a way to rally financial support for organizations working on sexual and reproductive health, with the ambition to mitigate the possible impact of decreased funding for family planning.
A crowdfunding platform was launched to also allow private donations.
On March 2nd of this year the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation will host an international conference in Brussels with interested governments, organizations and private companies that want to join forces to support non-governmental organizations and UN agencies working on family planning and women’s rights, in order to positively impact the position of women and girls around the world. During the conference countries can express their political and financial support, organizations can map their needs in detail and private companies can show their commitment.
Thank you very much for your attention.
