Statement by the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on OHCHR report on the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Item 10

Madam President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement. We are alarmed by the deteriorating human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are particularly concerned about the increase in human rights violations and abuses, despite a decrease in armed conflicts in the Kasai region.

Additionally, we were relieved to observe that the security of human rights activist and Nobel peace prize laureate Dr. Mukwege was restored. The Netherlands wants to thank MONUSCO and the authorities of the DRC for their efforts. We call upon the Congolese government to work, together with MONUSCO, on a long-term solution for the security of Dr Mukwege and the Panzi hospital. The Netherlands stands ready to assist those efforts.

Finally, the Netherlands would like to call attention to the lack of investigation and legal prosecution against the perpetrators of the Yumbi massacre. Justice for victims of the Yumbi massacre is fundamental to the fight against impunity. We urge the Congolese authorities to thoroughly investigate the Yumbi massacre and to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Madam President,

How will accountability be ensured in the case of the Yumbi massacre?

Thank you.
