UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL - 47TH SESSION
Interactive Dialogue with Special Adviser on Prevention of Genocide
National Statement Kingdom of the Netherlands
The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU-statement.
We reaffirm our full support to the mandate of the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide and we thank her for today’s update.
Credible reports indicate the severity of situations where a downward spiral of discrimination, intolerance and religious persecution can lead to a situation in which a vulnerable part of society is specifically targeted.
Madam President: we, as the international community, have an obligation not to look away. At all times, we should address risk factors and early warning signals before human rights concerns escalate into large scale violations or conflict.
The HRC as mandated by the IB package and reinforced by the adoption of HRC resolution ‘The contribution of the Human Rights Council to the prevention of human rights violations’ crucially complements the work of the SA Genocide in preventing mass atrocities.
Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu,
How can the Netherlands best assist you in the putting the prevention of atrocities upfront?
