Interactive Dialogue on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Bachelet on Myanmar

National statement by the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Madam Vice-President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement and thanks the High Commissioner for the oral update on the human rights situation in Myanmar, and reiterates its support for your efforts.

The Netherlands is alarmed at recent acts of violence that illustrate a sharp deterioration of the human rights environment across Myanmar. Since our last gathering in March, we have seen further violent escalation throughout the country.

The Netherlands reiterates its call on the military to ensure that international human rights norms and standards are respected. We unequivocally condemn any use of force against civilians, as well as the ongoing arrest and detention of protestors, politicians, civil society activists, journalists and pro-democracy leaders, and call for their immediate and unconditional release.

We stand in solidarity with those who risk their lives whilst openly and peacefully voicing their aspirations for a democratic future built on human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Netherlands calls for those responsible for human rights violations to be held accountable and to this end supports the work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar.

Madam high Commissioner,

We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights environment in Myanmar. What can be done to refrain from violence and increase dialogue among all parties?

Thank you.
