HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL – 54th SESSION
Interactive Dialogue on report of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM)
Statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Paul Bekkers, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Thank you Mr. President,
The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement. We thank the IIMM for its continued hard work, which remains crucial in supporting accountability efforts at the national, regional and international level.
We are deeply worried by the accounts in the report of intensified armed conflicts and of more evidence strongly indicating that serious international crimes are being committed against the people in Myanmar.
It is vital that perpetrators of human rights violations, including sexual and gender-based violence, are held accountable and are brought to justice. Accountability must be part of the solution for Myanmar. The sharing of collected evidence with authorities such as the ICC, the Attorney General’s Office in Argentina and the ICJ, greatly contribute to such accountability efforts.
Mr. Koumjian,
What actions can the international community take to further support the work of the IIMM in ensuring accountability on the basis of your findings?
