Explanation of vote on Draft Resolution on Syria

Statement by Lise Gregoire-van Haaren,
Deputy Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations

New York, 14 April 2018

Thank you Mr. president.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands has voted against the draft resolution proposed by the Russian Federation. It is because this draft does not provide for the action that the Security Council so urgently needs to take after the use of chemical weapons in Syria. It ignores the very essence of what the Security Council needs to do. This Council should:

  1. act and condemn the use of chemical weapons,
  2. protect the Syrian people,
  3. and hold accountable those responsible.

And this resolution does none of this.
