Policy event: Social Inclusion in Dutch culture and education practice

The Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU cordially invites you to a presentation and debate on Social Inclusion in Dutch culture and education, to be held on the 18 July from 17:00–18:30.

‘The importance of the social, educational and cultural dimension of our policies in bringing Europeans together and building our common future' was highlighted by the EU leaders at the European Council of December 2017. As a follow-up, the EU Education ministers adopted a Council Recommendation on ‘promoting common values, inclusive education, and the European dimension of teaching’ at the last EYCS Council on 22nd of May. This clearly indicates the relevance of the topic of achieving social inclusion through education and culture.

We were wondering how this broad policy theme can be put into practice. Does the policy actually connect well with practice? What obstacles do people in the field run into? On behalf of the Dutch Permanent Representation we would therefore like to invite you to an event where we will look at the day-to-day practice of two Dutch professionals who aim to promote social inclusion through education and culture. We are also very much looking forward to your input and perspectives during the discussion that will follow.

Our first speaker will be Jasmina Ibrahimovic. She fled to the Netherlands at the age of ten and therefore knows from first-hand experience what it is like to not (yet) be part of a community. This stimulated her to become active in the field of Community Arts. Jasmina now works at the Rotterdam Community Theatre as a theatre maker and she is involved in organizing the International Community Arts Festival.

The second speaker will be Halil Karaaslan. Halil teaches citizenship education at a secondary school and won the ECHO Award 2009, for students with a non-western background who contribute to equal opportunities for all. He is now also part of the jury of the Dutch Campaign Students-4-Students, an initiative with which the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science challenges students and teachers in Higher Education to develop initiatives that contribute to inclusive education.
