EB140 – item 11.3 on the Global Strategy on Women, Children and Adolescent Health

Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. 30 January 2017.

The Netherlands fully and vividly supports the statement delivered by Sweden on behalf of a group of countries including the requests made to the WHO secretariat.

We want to use this opportunity to present to the EB and to the WHO Members States, Observers and Secretariat the Global Fundraising Initiative “She decides” launched last Friday by Minister Lilianne Ploumen, Netherlands minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation to mitigate the effects of the reimplementation of the Mexico city policy.

Colleagues, I hope we all know our data well! Just in case, a small reminder: every day 830 women die of the consequences of complicated pregnancies. 13 % of these deplorable deaths are due to unsafe abortion. Moreover, many millions of women incure dangerous infections or become disabled due to a lack of proper health care. A quarter of a million women wants to prevent these situations – delay pregnancy, including STI – but do not have access to modern and safe contraception.

The aim of SHE DECIDES is to join forces in support of the right of women and girls to decide, freely and for themselves, whether, when and how many children they have. “She decides” is not a new institutional mechanism but a way to rally financial support and bring together existing political  for sexual and reproductive health, with the ambition to sustain and if possible increase funding for family planning and health care, including access to safe abortion, to lifesaving contraceptives, sexuality education, etcetera.

The Initiative is multistakeholder: governments, private foundations, companies, individuals, everybody can join and contribute – financially and/or politically. and the like. Thank you to those Member States that have already joined, or have expressed their interest in SHE DECIDES. For more information, or to join, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you mister Chair.
